“I’ve been drawing and painting since childhood. Back in the late 90s I started to experiment with new painting surfaces and eventually settled on sandpaper. I was trying to approximate the look of pastel on rough paper, my medium of choice when I was studying art at UW-Madison. I never tire of this painting technique because the rough surfaces tend to conflict with my natural tendency as a painter to fine tune and smooth things out. The stapled seams and rough surfaces add a peculiar tension and life to the images that might otherwise seem too clean, too finished. My work never fails to incorporate patterns. There are designed patterns within the images, patterns of seams and staples as they fall along the surface of the paintings and patterns of wood grain surfaces. Most of my subjects end up relating to the past in some way. Whether it’s outmoded styles and fashions, iconic locations in my hometown or just a childhood fascination with birds and nature. “
